Benefits Advocacy Coordinator  

Overview of Responsibilities:

The Benefits Advocacy Coordinator should be dedicated to reaching and empowering persons with disabilities of all ages to receive the benefits to which they are entitled, at a state and federal level.   This full-time position will also advocate for clients with various external agencies regarding benefits.  He/she must make presentations to community groups and professionals regarding programs and services as requested.

He/She is also responsible for the recruitment, training and supervision of benefit volunteers at both our main and satellite offices.   He/She is also responsible for completing required reports in a timely manner.

This position reports to the Program Director.
 

Essential Functions Include:

  • Maintain a professional manner in all interactions with the public
  • Ensure the completion of all goals and objectives related to PCIL’s Make Medicare Work project
  • Attend all staff and coordinator meetings
  • Ensure a high level of quality when documenting information
  • Maintain confidentiality of client information and files
  • Be knowledgeable concerning the benefits and programs available to people with disabilities of all ages at the federal, state and local level, including application processes and eligibility qualifications.
  • Review client files for eligibility for low  income benefits
  • Conduct speaking engagements in the community, complete documentation for event
  • Attend external trainings and required meetings
  • Complete all required forms and reports in timely manner
  • Recruit, train and supervise all Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) volunteers
  • Display appropriate etiquette during all direct communication with consumers 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent experience
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Must be comfortable and capable of working in a team environment
  • Must have strong familiarity with state and federal benefit programs including:
    • Medicare (Parts A, B, C, and D)
    • Medicaid
    • SSI/SSDI
  • Must have knowledge of Medicaid Managed Care programs
  • Previous experience collaborating with other service providers or agencies preferred
  • Personal experience with disability a plus
  • Excellent oral and written communication, and organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, networking and collaboration skills
  • Ability to travel independently within suburban Cook County

Progress Center is looking for caring and dependable men and women to work as personal assistants for people with disabilities and the elderly in their homes in surburban Cook County. Experience is helpful. Both full and part-time hours are available.
